Preparation and coordination are needed when deciding what food to have during the shiva. You need to decide what type of food the mourners will prefer and will find most comforting.
Jewish delicatessen foods are the most common and customary food items during shiva. Deli platters and smoked fish, among many other traditional style foods, can inspire comfort to the mourning family with their familiarity. However, if the family wants nontraditional good, Mediterranean food is a great option. Although traditions provide a guiding framework, the appropriateness of shiva food may simply be measured only in regards to what the family prefers. It is best to know what the family wants and to bring it to the shiva.
